Weekly classes

A weekly class at CBI Main campus consists of two hours of class time per week for an entire semester. Students get the opportunity to really know and spend time with a teacher for five months, going verse by verse through an entire book of the Bible, all while gleaning from the teacher’s ministry experiences, Bible knowledge, and pastoral heart. Students are encouraged to ask questions in class, during the 10-minute break after the end of the first hour, as well as before and after class.  CBI classes are designed to facilitate discipleship in addition to Bible knowledge.

In addition to these Weekly Bible Classes, male and female students are enrolled in the Pastoral Training and Women’s Ministry, respectively.  In Women’s Ministry, female CBI students are incorporated into Joshua Springs Calvary Chapel’s ladies’ study, where they gain Women’s Ministry experience through integrating into the fellowship, leading table discussions, greeting, and playing on the worship team. The male students meanwhile meet for Pastoral Training, where they practice giving 15-minute sermons, funerals, and testimonies for each other, gaining teaching and public speaking experience.

block classes

A Block Class is a unique teaching format, where a guest teacher is assigned to teach through an entire book of the Bible (or half of a larger book) in nine hours over the span of two days. This format gives students the opportunity to cover multiple chapters in one sitting as well as to connect with dozens of pastors and ministry leaders from different backgrounds, churches, and walks of life. By the end of the school year, students typically will have had 50-60 different pastors and ministry leaders teach them during their time at CBI.

In addition to the Bible Block Classes, CBI students are enrolled in two Inductive Bible Study Block Classes as well as two Calvary Chapel Distinctives Block Classes. Inductive Bible Study is a class for first semester students only, giving them basic tools to observe, interpret, and apply Scripture, as well as guidelines to be able to prepare their own small group Bible studies and sermons. Calvary Chapel Distinctives, on the other hand, is offered to 2nd semesters only. In it, students cover the various theological elements that set aside Calvary Chapel from other trains of thought and denominations.

bible survey classes

Bible Surveys are nicknamed “Chuck Tracks,” at CBI. Bible Surveys happen 2-3 a week for an hour-and-a-half each. Students meet in the cafeteria rather than in the classroom, and Chuck Smith’s audio C2000 audio teachings are played from a speaker, almost as if Chuck is one of the teachers at Calvary Bible Institute. He goes through the content in verse-by-verse fashion, drawing application and putting a great attention on the health of his audience’s spiritual walk with Jesus.
